Each year, AAIM's annual spring fundraiser selects one or two local Austinites who have put hope into action. For the 2005 Hope Awards Banquet, AAIM chose to honor those in Austin's faith and minority community who put hope into action by responding to the Katrina and Rita evacuees from the Gulf Coast.
In the aftermath of the biggest natural disaster ever to hit this country, Austin witnessed unprecedented generosity and extensive community collaboration. Cooperative efforts emerged across racial, ethnic, regional and religious lines. Remarkably, sacred and secular divides were transcended. The magnitude of this disaster placed incredible demands on our community to respond to overwhelming human need. The ten organizations we honored included:
- Austin Bridge Builders Alliance
- Austin Police Department Chaplains
- Barsana Dham Hindu Temple
- Community Action Development and Assistance
- Catholic Charities
- East Austin Network of Churches
- The Jewish Community Association of Austin
- The Rock
- Texas Interagency/Interfaith Disaster Response
- Vietnamese American Katrina Relief Effort
