AAIM
& Hands on Housing Announce Handy Helpers Program
With increasing
demand for home repair in East Austin, Hands on Housing
is taking steps to extend our services beyond our well-known spring and
fall repair campaigns. We will soon begin providing year-round
assistance. Our new program, "Handy Helpers," will address
the ongoing repair needs of the elderly and disabled. We'll
tackle repairs that are essential to keeping folks in their homes,
but smaller in scope than those handled by our usual repair teams. Our
goal is to address repair needs that would otherwise slip through the
cracks -- repairs that require only one person or perhaps a small team
of two to five people.
How can you help?
The Glimmer of Hope Foundation has granted AAIM's Hands on Housing
program the funds needed to begin "Handy Helpers" -- now the rest is up
to you! We need volunteers! We are especially looking for
retired trades professionals, skilled home repair people, handy men and
women, apprentices, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers.
Ideally, we are looking for folks with their own tools who can
volunteer on a consistent basis (weekly, biweekly, or monthly) or
several times a year when you are available.
Make a difference in someone's life today by becoming a Handy Helper!
Please contact Kathy Weiner at 386-9145 or by email, kweiner@aaimaustin.org
------------
Some of the typical work that will be done through the Handy Helpers Program includes:
Replacing rotten wood -- fascia, soffits, window trim, siding;
sheetrock repair, painting, door repair and replacements, window repair
and replacement, screen door installations, roof repair, rotten floor
replacement, door knob/window/screen/door replacements, toilet
replacement, leaky faucet repair, bath fixture replacement, outlet and
light fixture replacements, and tiling.
We also have a crucial need to replace faulty and/or inefficient window
air conditioning units -- if you are interested in donating money
towards the purchase of new units please let us know.

Thank
you everyone who joined us for UN
World Refugee Day at St. David's! Unhindered by rain and
stormy weather, several hundred refugees, volunteers, and members
of the Austin community gathered for this wonderful event, taking
refuge indoors to celebrate the diversity of cultures in Austin.
This year's Refugee Day featured the naturalization of 20 Austin area
refugees, as well as musical performances by Cuban female hiphop group
Las Krudas Cubensi and other refugees from Burma and Burundi.
Excitement built throughout the afternoon as Las Krudas
Cubensi drummed for the International Fashion Show -- a parade of
traditional attire spanning the globe.
Special thanks go out to our performers, our volunteers, our sponsoring
agencies, our generous host (St. David's) and everyone else who has welcomed Austin's newest residents
and helped them make a
fresh start in our community.

Hands on Housing
Bluebonnet Spring Blitz!
Saturday,
April 26th, 2008
Sunday,
May 4th, 2008
A gigantic thank you to all our volunteers
for
making the 2008 Spring Blitz a huge success!
17 houses and one church have been
improved with the help of 500 volunteers
YOU:
repaired leaky roofs,
replaced deteriorated flooring,
installed vent fans,
repaired hot water heaters,
replaced siding,
remodeled bathrooms and kitchens,
taped and floated sheetrock,
built porches,
and gave the best paint jobs in town!
We also want to thank you for all the care and kindness you showed to
our homeowners.
For leaving sites clean, and for being the happiest, hardest working
people!
Hearts are full and homes are safer because of you.
In addition, a big thank-you goes out to everyone who participated in
our Interfaith Hands On
Housing Day -- we had an overwhelming turnout from many
different faiths, all working together to paint and repair Bethany
Christian Church in East Austin.
